The curriculum involves 150 hours to satisfy Virginia state requirements, with an additional 35 hours toward strengthening individual student performance and career planning for success in the salon.The course includes instruction and practical experience in manicures, pedicures, nail theory, customer service, personal appearance & hygiene, personal motivation and development, retail skills, client record keeping, business ethics, state laws and regulations, salon-type administration, and job interviewing.
*Graduates are prepared for an entry level nail technician.
This course is taught in English. Textbooks and course materials are only offered in the English language.
The school does not have any written agreements with any other entity to offer in whole or part any of its educational programs.
The Nail Care course is an approved program through DPOR, NACCAS, SCHEV, and USDE.
nail care PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
The objective of this program is to prepare students to manage a successful nail care career and/or business, while preparing them to successfully pass the Virginia Board of Barbers and Nail Care exam.
nail care COURSE Overview
Course Hours: 185 clock hours
The course is divided into pre-clinical classroom instruction and clinical service learning experiences.
1. Pre-clinical Classroom Instruction: The hours are devoted to classroom workshops where students learn design principles, technical information, and professional practices.
2. Clinic Classroom Learning Experience: The remaining hours are spent in the clinic classroom area where practical experience is gained.
3. Distance Education Learning Experience: Students enrolled in the program with distance education will complete a portion of their education through online learning.

Your time at Rudy & Kelly Academy, A Paul Mitchell Partner School for the Nail Care program will be divided into two designations:
- Core Curriculum: This time period is dedicated to exploring foundational knowledge and basic nails procedures. You will receive individual attention in practical workshops, and you will complete practical evaluations and periodic tests throughout the course. This is an intense and exciting portion of your experience.
- Clinic Classroom Floor Learning Experience: Your remaining hours will be spent in a clinic classroom environment. You will dress, act, and work like a beauty industry professional. You will use your own technical and therapeutic abilities, coupled with the assistance of Learning Leaders, to provide service to guests. You will make discoveries and learn relationship-building skills that will ensure your success in this exciting, diverse field.

nail care PROGRAM TESTING AND GRADING PROCEDURE
The following tests and grading procedures are used to assess student learning and mastery of course content in the 185-hour course:
- Academic theory exams: Students must receive a grade of 75% or higher on each assigned theory exam. Exams are completed at the conclusion of each online theory module. Depending on the length of the distance education module, theory exams will occur weekly or bi-monthly. The theory exams will evaluate the student’s academic performance for each subject of the distance education curriculum.
- Core written and practical skills evaluation: Students must receive a grade of 75% or higher on each written exam and each practical skill exam in order to complete the Core program. The exams are an overview of instruction taught during the Core schedule. All Core written and practical skill exams must be passed with a 75% in order to transition to the Adaptive curriculum. If students are unable to pass each exam after two attempts, the student may be asked to withdraw from the program. The Core written and practical skills evaluation must be completed within the school facility and cannot be taken through distance education.
- Final written and practical: The written test covers an overview of all theory instruction, Virginia state law, and other items covered on the state nail technician exam. Students must receive a grade of 75% or higher on all final exams. Final Exams must be completed within the school facility and cannot be taken through distance education.
- Clinic Practical Skill Assessments: Progress in practical skill assessments and instructional hours will be digitally monitored using the My Portico app. All assigned practical skill assessments must be completed in order to complete the program.
- Distance education assessments: Students must complete a distance education written assessment and practical skill assessment. These are based on performance and must be completed on-campus each month. The distance education assessment will focus on the distance education subjects covered during that time period. Students must receive a grade of 75% or higher on each distance education written assessment and each practical skill assessment. Only students enrolled in the distance education program are required to complete these assessments.
Students are assigned theory study and an essential number of practical experiences. Theory is evaluated after each unit of study. Practical assignments are evaluated as completed and counted toward course completion only when rated as satisfactory or better. Students must maintain a theory grade average of 75% and pass a final written and practical exam prior to graduation. Students must make up missed tests and incomplete assignments.

nail care INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUES AND METHODS
The Nail Care 185 clock hour course is provided through a sequential set of learning steps which address specific tasks necessary for State Board preparation, graduation and job entry level skills. Clinic equipment, implements and products are comparable to those used in the industry. Each student will receive instruction that relates to the performance of useful, creative and productive career-oriented activities. The course is presented through well-developed lesson plans that reflect the latest educational methods. Subjects are presented by means of lecture, demonstration, distance education and student participation. Audio-visual aids, guest speakers, field trips, and other related learning methods are used in the course.
In order to enroll in the Nail Care hybrid program of study, the student must have the following hardware, software, and network requirements:

- High-Speed Internet minimum of 600 Kbps (a mere 0.6 Mbps) download speeds to make one-on-one video calls on Zoom. The company’s website recommends a minimum 1 Mbps download speed for group calls. Doing group video calls in 1080p resolution requires at least 2.5 Mbps upload and download speed
